Keyannah Isaacs (b.2000 UK) is a London-based artist, who graduated from Central Saint Martins BA Fine Art in 2023.
Rooted in primarily sculpture and installation, their practice investigates the fragile and porous divide between classifications. Vacillating [in]-between categories such organic/non-organic, life/decay, wet/dry, fragile/stable, safety/danger - they aim to disrupt the deep rooted structures that have confined us through the construction and establishment of a ‘self’.
Isaacs enacts this confrontation through the transformative exploration of [organic] materials such as growing s.c.o.b.y and agar, to harnessing the decomposition of substances and other amorphous matter. Through states of becoming and decay, this exploration is left exposed to register the effects of time. Coupling the organic with metalwork and resins, Isaacs intends to carve out space for hybrid alternatives wherein they otherwise confine.
Isaacs’ past research argues that sensory experiences such as smell and touch can create psychophysical responses which further breaks down the construction of self. Born from this confrontation we see another dichotomy: disgust and desire, which the artist believes is in fact a dialectic reaction at the core of our assembly.
Transgression can be dangerous, but the artist believes what is ambiguous, seen as an abomination, or as undetermined has the potential of liberation. What is negated into the liminal must be set free. The boundaries that confine us must burst; and leak; and pour
and pour
and pour …
